Brief History
Da Mo Qi-Gong was originally developed as a set of exercises to aid the Shaolin monks in there health and well-being. It derived heavily from Yoga and Indian fitness exercises. The only focus for Shaolin Kung Fu training is to have a healthy and fit body, to house a strong mind to enable Shaolin Monks to search and reach Enlightenment.
In about 539 AD, a holy man named Bodhidharma (later called Da Mo by the Chinese) left his monastery in Southern India to spread the Buddhist faith to China, later called Ch'an Buddhism. Also known as Zen in Japanese.
On discovering the Shaolin Temple. Bodhidharma sought entrance to Shaolin but the abbot would not let him into the temple. Bodhidharma was determined to enter and he located to a nearby cave on the side of a mountain ( this cave can still be visited today) it is said that he sat in meditation and that he sat facing a wall for up to nine years.
It is said that he fell asleep meditating and his eyelids closed and when he awoke, he was so distraught that he cut of his eye lids so that this would not happen again.
Finally after 9 years he was admitted into the temple.
Upon gaining entrance to the Shaolin Temple, Da Mo found that the monks were weak and unable to perform the rigorous meditations he expected that Buddhist Monks should be practicing. Whilst meditating they often fell asleep or were very restless. He spent some time in seclusion pondering the problem. Da Mo came to the conclusion, that the monks were not fit to meditate. With this in mind he started working on a solution; he then created a set of exercises that became so popular they form the foundation of all Shoalin Kung Fu practiced today.
